A Marriage Made in Heaven but Living in Hell: the Arts and the Sciences in Australian Universities Today
Flinders Investigators is a free monthly public lecture series bringing world-leading research to the wider community.
The first lecture in the series for 2016 will be delivered by Strategic Professor of Creative Arts, Julian Meyrick on: A Marriage Made in Heaven but Living in Hell: the Arts and the Sciences in Australian Universities Today.
Date: Wednesday 16 March
Venue: Adelaide Festival Centre, Lyrics Room
The arts and the sciences seem at daggers drawn in today’s cash-strapped, rankings-obsessed, ultra-competitive research environment. What are the roots of their antagonism? What are its effects?
In this lecture Professor Julian Meyrick revisits the famous Two Cultures Debate fifty years ago between physicist and novelist CP Snow and literary critic FR Leavis, and asks whether the oceanic divide between the two disciplinary realms should now be crossed.
